The History of Open Door Preschool

In 1964, a group of parents opened the first integrated preschool in Augusta. No child was turned away due to their ethnicity or religion. It was the only preschool with an ‘open door’ policy and was entirely administered by the parents. Today, after 50 years, Open Door Preschool provides a nurturing environment for children 14 months through five years old.
It remains unique as the only parent-run, non-sectarian preschool in the area. True to its history, it continues to be a non-profit organization.
Mission Statement
Open Door Preschool is a non-profit, parent-directed school whose mission is to enhance the growth of each child by encouraging a positive self-image, promoting independence from home, and fostering the development of responsibility in a non-sectarian, child-centered environment.
